Economic Uncertainty clocks in before everyone else

Economic Uncertainty has again been named Britain’s employee of the month after affecting turnover at a quarter of responding businesses while turning up every morning with nothing prepared.

The ONS found that 95% of businesses answering its survey were trading in early August 2025. A quarter said uncertainty was affecting turnover, making it the most commonly reported challenge and the only colleague permitted to derail a budget without learning anyone’s name.

Businesses face real pressure from demand, costs and future conditions. The joke is the office ritual that converts those pressures into a forty slide forecast, followed by someone announcing that the future is difficult to predict as though they have just cornered the market in weather.

The forecast requests another meeting

“Our outlook remains cautiously restless,” said Hugo Maybe Smythe, director of Pending Clarification. “We have modelled every scenario except somebody making a decision before the biscuits arrive.”

Uncertainty has proved unusually efficient. It makes firms postpone investment, creates a steering group and sends an invitation called Aligning On The Way Forward, which nobody opens because the way forward is already in another meeting.

One retailer asked when confidence might return. The forecast replied that it was awaiting approval from confidence, whose manager was on annual leave until market conditions improved.

The figures are estimates and carry sampling uncertainty, which is honest and useful. They also mean the national statistics office has achieved the rare feat of measuring uncertainty while uncertainty leans over its shoulder asking whether the sample feels representative enough.

Consistency remains the growth story

At a board meeting, directors praised Economic Uncertainty for its dependable performance. It had lowered projections, widened ranges and left the action points untouched, the precise standard of delivery expected from a senior executive.

Next quarter could be different. Economic Uncertainty has already warned that any confidence about this would be premature, commercially irresponsible and very bad for its promotion prospects.
